How to Choose the Right Mattress for Your Sleep Style
The right mattress depends on how you sleep, how much you weigh, and who shares the bed with you. Price and brand matter far less than getting these three right.
Start with your sleep position
- Side sleepers need a softer top layer, so the shoulder and hip can sink in a little and the spine stays straight.
- Back sleepers usually do best on medium-firm. It holds the lower back up without pushing against it.
- Stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress. On a soft one the hips sink and the lower back arches.
- If you change position through the night, choose medium-firm. It suits all three reasonably well.
Think about body weight
A heavier person sinks further into the same mattress, so it feels softer to them. If you are above about 90 kg, go one step firmer than you think. If you are light, a firm mattress can feel like a board; one step softer is usually more comfortable.
Pick the right thickness
- 6 inches: guest beds, children and occasional use.
- 8 inches: everyday use for one lighter adult.
- 10 inches: the usual choice for a couple.
- 12 inches: the most cushioning, for heavier sleepers or anyone who wants a deeper feel.
Measure the bed, not the old mattress
Old mattresses shrink and sag. Measure the inside of the bed frame, length and width, in inches. If it is not a standard size, we make mattresses to custom sizes.
Try it before you order
Every Relaxon mattress is made to order, so we cannot offer a trial period or take back a mattress because the feel was wrong. That makes trying one in person worth the trip. Visit a showroom and lie on each model for at least five minutes, in the position you actually sleep in. If you share the bed, bring your partner.
