Mattress Care and Maintenance: A Complete Guide
A mattress that is looked after keeps its shape and stays fresh for years longer. Most of it takes a few minutes every few months.
Rotate it every three months
Turn the mattress so the head end goes to the foot. This spreads the wear, so one spot does not dip where you always lie. For the first year, rotating every month helps it settle evenly.
Use a mattress protector
A washable protector stops sweat, spills and dust from reaching the foam. It is far easier to wash a protector than to clean a mattress.
Let it breathe
Air the room regularly, and once in a while leave the bed unmade for an hour in the morning. Moisture trapped in a mattress is what causes smells and mould, especially in the monsoon.
Clean spills quickly
Blot, do not rub. Use a cloth with a little mild soap and cold water, then let the spot dry fully before you put the sheet back. Never soak a mattress or put it in direct sunlight to dry, which can damage the foam and fabric.
Give it proper support
A mattress needs a flat, firm base. Wide gaps between bed slats, or a broken plank, let it sag and wear out early.
Avoid jumping and sitting on the edge
Children jumping on the bed, or sitting on the same edge every day to put on shoes, breaks down the edge faster than anything else.
