Memory Foam vs Hybrid: Which Mattress Type is Right for You?

Memory foam and hybrid mattresses feel quite different, and neither is better for everyone. The choice comes down to how you like a bed to feel, how warm you sleep, and whether someone else shares it.

What memory foam is

A memory foam mattress is made of layers of foam. The top layer softens with body heat and moulds to your shape, then slowly returns when you get up. It gives a "sinking in" feel.

  • Good for: side sleepers, people with sore shoulders or hips, and couples, because a partner turning over is barely felt.
  • Less good for: people who sleep hot, and anyone who finds it hard to change position on a soft, slow surface.

What a hybrid is

A hybrid has a core of springs with layers of foam on top. The springs give bounce and let air move through; the foam adds comfort.

  • Good for: back and stomach sleepers, heavier people, people who sleep hot, and anyone who likes a bouncy bed that is easy to move on.
  • Less good for: light sleepers sharing a bed, because some movement passes through the springs.

Side by side

  • Feel: memory foam hugs your body; a hybrid lets you lie on top of it.
  • Temperature: memory foam holds more heat; a hybrid stays cooler.
  • Movement: memory foam absorbs it; a hybrid passes some across.
  • Edges: a hybrid usually has firmer edges for sitting on.
  • Weight: a hybrid is heavier to lift and rotate.

Which one is right for you?

If you sleep on your side and run cool, try memory foam first. If you sleep on your back or stomach, weigh more, or wake up warm, try a hybrid. The quickest way to know is to lie on both: our showroom staff can show you which of our models are which.
