When Should You Replace Your Mattress?

A good mattress usually lasts about seven to ten years, but the number on the calendar matters less than how it feels and how you sleep. These are the signs it is time.

You can see a dip

Take the sheets off and look along the surface. A visible hollow where you lie, or lumps, means the support has gone. Even a dip of an inch or two can throw your spine out of line.

You wake up stiff or sore

If you wake with back, neck or shoulder pain that eases during the day, the mattress is a likely cause. Another clue: you sleep better in a hotel or at a relative's house.

You feel your partner move

As foam and springs wear out, the mattress stops absorbing movement. If every turn your partner makes wakes you, the layers inside have probably broken down.

It makes noise

Creaking or squeaking springs mean the springs are worn.

Allergies or smells

An old mattress collects dust mites, sweat and dead skin. If you sneeze more in bed, or the mattress smells musty even after airing, it is time.

Your body has changed

A big change in weight, pregnancy, a new back problem, or simply getting older can mean you now need a firmer or softer mattress than the one you have.

How to make the next one last

Rotate it every three months, use a mattress protector, and give it a firm, flat base. Our mattress care guide has the details.
